Fall/winter 2017 makeup trends straight from the runway

With grungy vibes, vibrant colors, understated looks plus graphic, futuristic and tribal inspirations, a whole host of makeup trends were showcased on the catwalks of New York, London, Milan and Paris, where labels recently presented their fall/winter 2017 collections. Eyes seem to take center stage this season, with many designers focusing on strong eye looks.

Whether with dark smoky blacks, fluorescent pops of color, pearly shimmer, bold graphic lines or nudes, eye makeup inspired many of the labels, designers and makeup artists at the final fashion week of the season in Paris. But the trend spanned all the fashion capitals, where designers explored various eye makeup effects, from high glam to high grunge to borderline gothic, as well as some more natural looks.

A strong smoky eye

Certain labels brought strong smoky eyes to the runway, with deepest, darkest blacks used to make models' eyes really stand out. Eyes were dark and sultry, sometimes with graphic lines bringing a modern twist to this smoky beauty look. Smoky styles ranged high-glam to grungy, sometimes almost gothic.

At Balmain, Olivier Rousteing picked a strong smoky eye for his "Army" of models, with fresh, luminous skin contrasting with intense, feline eyes. Lips were natural and sometimes finished with a golden jewelry creation. Elie Saab and Versace also picked a black, sooty look, but in two very different styles.

Vibrant eyes

Color was everywhere in this season's collections, and naturally this spilled over into makeup. Bold brights popped with lively energy, and colors were vibrant to the point of fluorescent, as designers splashed various shades on models' eyes in this latest fashion month.

The most vibrant shades of turquoise, pink, red and orange drew attention to eyes, sometimes with long, thick lines following the contour of the eye perfectly, and sometimes with rectangular, boxy effects. This trend was spotted on the catwalk at Leonard Paris, Fyodor Golan, Prabal Gurung, FentyxPuma, and also -- although to a lesser extent -- at Desigual.

Yohji Yamamoto showed off a two-tone makeup look outlining one eye in red and finishing the other with a thick, black strikethrough. Versus also brought colorful eyes to the runway with red, midnight blue and turquoise in almost rectangular shapes, creating a mask-like effect over eyes.

The natural look

Natural looks were popular with the majority of fashion houses this season. Although natural doesn't mean no makeup, this season saw faces finished with nude or golden shades, or meticulously contoured, playing with light to create a perfect, sculpted face.

Although there were a few exceptions, lips were generally kept natural. Yves Saint Laurent, for example, kept lips nude or simply enhanced them with a touch of pink. The natural look was also prominent at Christian Dior, with a very light-touch makeup look, as well as at Louis Vuitton, Esteban Cortazar, Etro, Max Mara and Calvin Klein
