Guess releases second sustainability report, increases transparency

Published
Sep 21, 2017

Guess has released its second sustainability report outlining specific steps the company will take to reduce water use and its carbon footprint.

Guess

Guess issued its first sustainability report in 2015. The most recent report indicates that the brand is looking at reducing water use in its denim processing and has introduced a comprehensive water action management plan to achieve that goal.

The report also revealed Guess has outlined a two year plan to reduce carbon emissions. It is prioritizing becoming a closed loop manufacturer that encourages reduction, reuse and recycling of materials. Guess has already taken steps towards energy reduction in store as well through replacing lighting with LED lights.

Victor Herrero, Chief Executive Officer for Guess, Inc. said, "At Guess, we understand that we must continue to grow and contribute to the global community with increasing care for people and the environment; we aim to embrace existing solutions as well as try new ones to address the social and environmental challenges of our time."

Herrero noted the company is paying attention to the millennial consumer who is concerned with the environment and with making the world a better place.

The second sustainability report revealed Guess has been able to reduce its carbon dioxide and greenhouse gas emissions by 2 percent over the 2015 fiscal year. Guess plans to expand its denim recycling program as well as increase supply chain transparency overall.

It has set a goal of 2021 as the end date by when it will have significantly reduced its carbon footprint. It will reduce carbon dioxide emissions from both direct processing activities and indirect actions like importing electricity or steam.

Guess is part of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). As part of the GRI, it has its data evaluated independently which improves accountability. This will help Guess work towards its goal of transparency.
