Is Anna Wintour leaving Vogue?

Published
Apr 4, 2018

Multiple sources have told the NY Post's Page Six that after 30 years, Anna Wintour will be leaving Vogue this summer after the annual September issue wraps production. Condé Nast denies Wintour's departure.

A corporate spokesperson for Condé Nast told Page Six yesterday, "We emphatically deny these rumors." No additional information was offered.

The 68-year old Wintour ascended to the title of editor in chief of Vogue in 1988. In 2013 she was named the artistic director of all Condé Nast publications.

While unconfirmed by Condé Nast, Page Six's sources report the editor of British Vogue, Edward Enninful, is likely to be Wintour's replacement as the editor of US Vogue.

Jonathan Newhouse, chairman of Condé Nast International, is expected to return to New York. Page Six reports that sources have said Newhouse is uncomfortable with the amount of power that Wintour has.

The top position was bestowed upon Wintour by former longtime Condé Nast chairman, Si Newhouse. He passed away in 2017, with his cousin Jonathan assuming the lead role.

While Vogue without Wintour at the helm certainly is uncharted territory for the fashion industry, Condé Nast has been making significant changes recently. Page Six reports that the sources said the company is $100 million in debt. In the past year it ceased publishing print editions of Self, Teen Vogue and Details, and has also closed its Style.com site.

Condé Nast has also been making dramatic editorial leadership changes that indicate the company's drive to harness younger, digitally-inclined leaders. 25-year Vanity Fair veteran editor in chief Graydon Carter was replaced by Radhika Jones. Cindi Leive was replaced at Glamour by Samantha Barry after 16 years. Linda Wells, who led Allure for 14 years, was replaced by Michelle Lee.
