Marc Jacobs offers fashion design MasterClass

Published
Nov 17, 2017

Marc Jacobs has teamed up with MasterClass to offer his first online course in fashion design. The fifteen video session class teaches construction, creating unique shapes and silhouettes, and creating new trends.

Marc Jacobs - MasterClass

MasterClass has posted a preview video on the course site where Jacobs explains that the course will discuss "things that I wish I knew starting out." Jacobs helped design the curriculum as a way to offer insight into his creative process.

The designer continues, “The heart of my class is sharing the technical process. Once in a while it’s a fabric that inspires a dress and other times it’s the dress we want to make that inspires the fabric.”

In addition to the fifteen video lessons led by Jacobs, students will be able to download a workbook with assignments and recaps from lectures. The designer will also answer specific questions from students in an office hours component.

The entire course is designed to help students "develop [their] own ideas from first sketch to the final piece." Although the opportunity to learn from a CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award winning designer is a huge draw, MasterClass founder David Rogier warns that it is not a course on technical design and that it is instead meant to inspire students to create meaningful things.

Marc Jacobs is the latest partnership between the fashion industry and MasterClass. Earlier this year the site launched a course on building a fashion brand taught by Diane von Furstenberg. The site also offers a design and architecture class taught by Frank Gehry.

The Marc Jacobs course is currently available for pre-enrollment and the course will go online officially in early 2018.

MasterClass was started in 2015 by Stanford graduate Rogier. A lifetime membership is $90 and offers the opportunity to learn from industry leaders across multiple disciplines.
