Proenza Schouler hires a diverse cast including trans models for its latest lookbook

Published

Proenza Schouler is already known for its cutting-edge designs, and now the label is taking a forward-thinking approach to its model casting as well. The brand is capturing attention for its decision to cast a diverse group of faces, including three trans models, in its latest lookbook.

Proenza Schouler’s designers Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez collaborated with photographer Ethan James Green to create the pre-Autumn/Winter 2017 lookbook. Green is best known for his black and white portraits and particularly his work photographing the LGBT community. His portfolio includes black and white images of LGBT anti-Trump protesters.

McCollough and Hernandez are conscious of the lack of diversity in their industry, which has frequently been criticized for its lack of inclusion of models of color in fashion shows and ad campaigns. “Diversity in our industry has been embarrassingly lackluster over the years and so with this shoot, we felt it was right to go there and really celebrate it,” they told Dazed.

The new Proenza Schouler lookbook is shot in color, but his work with the LGBT community was an important part of the shoot. “Ethan’s way of capturing distinct personalities in a socially conscious and progressive way and his strong connection with New York and its underground subcultures is something we respect,” the design duo said.

McCollough and Hernandez cite the diversity of contemporary New York City as inspiration for the casting of their latest look. But despite their connection to the city and the fact that the two made their name at New York Fashion Week, the designers recently announced their decision to take their upcoming collection to Paris. Instead of showing its Spring 2018 collection in the fall, it will present the line during the Couture shows in July. Like fashion darling Vetements, it’s one of a few brands to leave the traditional fashion calendar behind.
