Walmart refreshes its private-label apparel business with new brands

Published
Feb 21, 2018

Retail giant Walmart Inc is introducing new low-price brands in the womenswear, plus-size and childrenswear categories, and also has plans to restructure its website around fashion.

As confirmed to CNBC by a source close to the developments, the retailer’s new lines will include Time and Tru for women, Terra & Sky for plus sizes, and Wonder Nation for kids.

Some of Walmart’s older apparel brands such as Faded Glory and White Stag will be phased out of stores, although certain items will remain available online. George, integrated from the retailer’s British unit Asda, will be streamlined as an exclusively menswear brand.

Following announcements at the end of the last year, Walmart is also planning to rework its website, redesigning it around fashion and home goods. The reconceptualized site will feature pieces from Hudson’s Bay’s Lord & Taylor.

Large retail rivals such as Amazon and Target have also been investing in private-label clothing brands as competition in the apparel industry continues to grow, with a recent study from Coresight Research suggesting that Amazon, in particular, is picking up speed in the sector.

Walmart announced its fourth quarter 2017 results this Tuesday, reporting lower-than-expected profits, while comparable sales in the US increased for the 14th consecutive quarter.

Items from the Time and Tru, Terra & Sky, and Wonder Nation lines are available now on Walmart’s website.
