Amazon inches closer to choosing second headquarters' location

Published
Oct 21, 2018

Amazon continues to narrow its sights on the location of its $5 billion second headquarters, which could create up to 50,000 jobs.

Amazon executives have revisited several of the 20 finalist cities in the past few months, including New York City, Newark, Chicago, Miami and cities in the Washington, D.C. area, according to a report by the Wall Street Journal.

WSJ also reported that locations like Miami and Washington D.C.-area cities have received follow ups from Amazon officials.

Countless cities submitted bids to the e-commerce giant before its October 2017 deadline, offering tax breaks and other deal-sweetening incentives in exchange for the new business, jobs and boosted real estate value the headquarters is anticipated to bring to its chosen location.

The e-tailer announced the search for its second headquarters' location in September of last year. At the time, Amazon said it would limit its search to metropolitan areas of at least 1 million people and give extra attention to cities offering a wide range of incentives. Since then, states like New Jersey and California have attempted to bait the company with incentives worth millions to billions of dollars.

The 20 cities contending for the new headquarters also include Atlanta, Boston, LA, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Toronto, Canada.

Amazon is set to reveal its decision by the end of the year.
