Banks Journal opens first flagship in LA

Published
Feb 14, 2018

Sustainability-focused coastal brand Banks Journal has opened its first brick-and-mortar flagship in Los Angeles' The Row DTLA. In addition to apparel, the store features curated goods from "like-minded brands."

The flagship is designed to reflect the brand co-founders' Australian and Japanese heritage - Banks Journal

The Banks Journal flagship offers the brand's eco-friendly clothing made of recycled polyester and organic cotton. A range of the brand's woven shirts, knits, jackets, and shorts is merchandised along with surfboards and bikes. The 1,000-square-foot flagship also offers curated assortments of vintage rugs, vinyl, and design books.

The brand said in a release, "Opening our first retail location provides us an amazing opportunity to showcase our brand’s story of using sustainable and organic materials in a way that can relate to our customers."

The brand's story combines the Australian and Japanese aesthetic of its co-founders. To round out its first retail space, Banks Journal worked with design firm West of West.

The firm designed a hanging wood ceiling installation reminiscent of traditional Japanese woodworking. The piece is intended to be a focal point in the brand's modern and minimalist space.

"Our new space seeks to blend our Australian and Japanese heritage with our sustainable ethos and coastal influence and appeal," Banks Journal explained.

Banks Journal's flagship is located in the historic 1900’s building in The Row in Downtown LA. The building previously housed American Apparel and the LA Terminal Market along the Southern Pacific Railroad.
