US cosmetics group Estée Lauder has recently appointed Umair Ansari to the post of vice-president and managing director of travel retail for the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) region. Ansari will start in his new role on January 1 2022, and will be based in London. Ansari joined Estée Lauder in 2004, and was until now in charge of travel retail for the Middle East, Africa and India region, operating from Dubai.

After joining the US group, Ansari held a number of executive positions in the supply chain department and in international business planning. Since 2015, he has been active in the group’s travel retail division. He was initially vice-president of strategy and business development, and two years later he was appointed vice-president and CEO of worldwide travel retail for the Aramis and designer fragrances division (including names like Tommy Hilfiger and DKNY), which today no longer exist as such. He was also in charge of Origins, Smashbox, Glamglow and Becca.

In his new role, Ansari will be responsible for the growth and profitability of Estée Lauder’s travel retail business in EMEA. He will be tasked with managing the brand portfolio, working with the group's retail partners while travelling is gradually returning to normal in the region, as well as expanding the brands’ distribution footprint and developing digital initiatives for travellers.

In Q1 of the 2021-22 fiscal year, closed on September 30, US cosmetics group Estée Lauder reported a revenue of $3.56 billion (€3.06 billion), equivalent to a 23% increase. The group has underlined its double-digit travel retail sales growth in the period, without providing further details. The segment is still being impacted by travel restrictions worldwide, and by the renewed outbreak of Covid-19 cases in many countries.
