According to the bankruptcy file published on Faillissementen Dossier, the court in Amsterdam declared the footwear retailer bankrupt on 15 January 2019. The insolvent includes an online store and 20 brick-and-mortar branches across the country, including three stores in Amsterdam and two branches in Haarlem.

According to local media, liquidator Christiaan Zijlaard of law firm Houthoff and Leemans Schoenen are jointly looking into options to possibly relauunch the footwear chain. Nelson Schoenen is mentioned as a possible candidate for the takeover. Earlier this month, Nelson Schoenen acquired four branches of bankrupt footwear chain Bovendeert Schoenen, which went into liquidation in December 2018.

Leemans Schoenen started as a family business and opened its first store at Amsterdam’s Kinkerstraat in 1895.  The retailer’s range includes footwear and accessories for men and women. Available brands include Australian, Café Moda, Esprit, Puma and Tamaris.
