Gabriela Hearst debuts menswear collection

Published
May 21, 2019

Gabriela Hearst has launched into menswear.

Gabriela Hearst

Founded as a luxury womenswear label in 2015, designer Gabriela Hearst’s eponymous label has unveiled a new men’s offering with a premiere collection of pants, jackets, t-shirts, crewnecks and sweaters. Designed as clean, simple silhouettes and in deep blues, whites, greys and blacks, prices range from $290 for a t-shirt to $6,900 for a cashmere trench coat.

Representatives from the label confirmed that the men’s collection was made with the help of English graphic designer Peter Miles, who was “consulted on the launch of Gabriela Hearst menswear.”

Miles has previously worked in various creative capacities with luxury labels like Marc Jacobs, Celine and Proenza Schouler.

The label further noted the influence of Gabriela Hearst’s late mother-in-law Austine Hearst, whose opinions on men’s fashion served as the main inspiration for the collection, representatives said. Austine, a reporter at The Washington Times-Herald, wrote the following in a circa-1950 text, with the brand providing a copy of it to FashionNetwork.com on Tuesday:

“To be practical, conventional and at the same time original, a man must show more subtlety and ingenuity than a woman...in my opinion, a formula for today might include: Not to be too neat, too matched up, too color-schemed, and too snugly fitted. Men should aim for nonchalance, individuality, without novelty," an excerpt of note by Austine Hearst reads.

The collection is available now at the Gabriela Hearst flagship in New York City, as well as at gabrielahearst.com, Bergdorf Goodman and Mr. Porter.

LVMH Luxury Ventures, the fund launched by LVMH in 2017 to support emerging labels with investments from 2-5 million euros, took a minority stake in Gabriela Hearst in January of this year.
