Jeremy Scott’s metabolic mode

Published
Sep 7, 2019

One can learn a certain amount about a designer’s obsessions from the gifts they leave on your seat at a fashion show. Especially at Jeremy Scott.

The Los Angeles-based designer generously gave us all a slim package at his show on Friday night. A slim red envelope reading, "You’re so Hot," inside of which one discovered a sachet of "super powder" by Sakara named "Metabolism." A plant-based supplement, which promised to "rev metabolism; eliminate bloat; support waste weight loss and control sugar cravings."

An ideal recipe, it turned out, for Scott’s latest collection: a wacky wardrobe of characters, attention-seeking outfits for those who crave to be noticed. Staged in Spring Studios in downtown Tribeca, Scott’s show was in effect the first major runway moment of New York Fashion Week and the four-week international catwalk season.

Intergalactic Amazons in dayglo mini-coat dresses worn with silver boots; purple metallic silk frocks with enormous ruffles; psychedelic planetary map body stockings; green zebra-print mini-wrap dresses. Endless legs, never-ending mini-booties all worn by models with giant primary-color wigs.

Backed up by a great soundtrack courtesy of Michel Gaubert including the B52’s classic cut "Give Me Back My Man."

In this coed show, the men were in bright tropical forest camouflage gears – though for hustling, not hunting – or giraffe-pattern cowboy boots.

Every look for guys or girls required a lean, mean figure – and hence one could not help but be thankful for the sachet of Metabolism. All bloating banned.

Think Trash and Vaudeville haute couture. This may not have been Scott’s greatest show but one could not fault its energy. That said, one could also not help thinking that Jeremy now tends to reserve his best work for his day job in Italy for Moschino – a brand which, let’s recall, he has turned into a raging success.
