In 2023, India is on track to become the most populous country in the world, ahead of China, according to a projection by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. India has 1.4 billion inhabitants and a growing middle class, making it a highly observed market for both luxury and beauty players.

Lancôme returns to India - Lancôme

With this backdrop, young Indian beauty brand Sugar Cosmetics closed a funding round of $50 million in May with a group of investors including the Asian arm of L Catterton, which is the Franco-American investment fund co-founded by luxury giant LVMH. Now, global beauty giant L’Oréal plans to re-establish the flagship brand of its luxury division, Lancôme, in the Indian market.

Five years ago, Lancôme made a foray into the Indian market. However, a weak demand for luxury products caused it to retreat.

Now, things appear to have changed, according to L’Oréal’s India managing director Amit Jain. “In recent years, we have witnessed an increase in premium and luxury categories in the personal care and beauty segments,” said Jain.

“By relaunching the iconic luxury brand of our portfolio Lancôme in India, we want to meet the growing demands of Indian consumers who are looking for high-end beauty products.”

The return of Lancôme to the Indian market will roll out through the 17 Sephora stores in the country as well as on the e-commerce store of LVMH group’s select perfume brand.

In addition, in order to support this launch, L’Oréal will run a wide-reaching 360° media campaign in India. This will include a segment in partnership with Vogue Magazine.
