Paris trade court asked to liquidate New Look France

At a hearing on Monday, the administrators looking after the French subsidiary of British fashion retailer New Look, which filed for receivership in March, asked the Paris trade court to liquidate the company swiftly, in the absence of credible buyers, according to the employees’ counsel Judith Krivine. “The liquidation should be ruled upon at a hearing on Wednesday,” said Krivine.

New Look’s employees received a negative response from the fashion retailer’s parent company, whom they asked for a boost in the job protection plan. During a meeting at the French Labour Ministry on Friday, employee representatives asked the authorities to intervene with the British group.

“It’s unacceptable that the [French] state and [New Look’s] French employees should end up as the butt of the joke for the strategic choices made by a British group,” which “is backed by a South African investment fund” and has received “over €1 million in tax credits from the French government,” said Krivine.

Faced with financial difficulties, budget fashion retailer New Look launched a restructuring plan last September which included store closures and job cuts in France. The plan was discarded in November as new management took over. At the end of February, the latter announced it was looking for buyers for New Look’s entire French business.

Only two bids, both regarded as not credible, were put forward to buy only one store, located in Faubourg Saint-Antoine, Paris.

New Look France has about 400 employees, of whom 350 on a permanent contract. Four of the chain’s 30 French stores have been occupied by angry employees since Friday.

New Look has already closed down all its stores in China and Belgium. A year ago, the group announced it would close down 60 stores and cut 980 jobs in the UK.
