Primark to have nearly 50 stores in Spain by 2019

Primark likes Spain. The country has become the second largest market for the chain in terms of sales volumes and number of stores, and its store portfolio is growing at a fast rate. An expansion programme could see the retailer reach nearly 50 stores in Spain next year.

“We are committed to continue investing in Spain,” company sources told FashionNetwork.com. Two openings are planned for next year, including a site on Gran Via in the heart of Bilbao and a shop in the Palmas Altas shopping centre in Seville, which is due to launch soon.

The new stores will join a string of recent openings in Valencia city centre, in the Torre Sevilla shopping mall (its first in the city), in Almeria and at Islazul in Madrid, where it has recently relocated a shop. There are similar plans for a store at the newly opened Diagonal Mar shopping centre in the coming months.

This brings the total number of Primark stores in Spain to 47, but the number is due to grow with further openings in 2019. The company will have a presence in all major Spanish cities, including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Bilbao, Malaga, La Coruña and Seville.

“We plan to have a Primark store in most, if not all, big cities in Spain,” the company said, hinting at further openings. “We continue to study opportunities for new stores in Spain, focusing on large catchment areas.”
Since arriving in Spain in 2006, the country has become the second largest market for Primark. Financially, the retail chain experienced a tough November and it expected adjusted earnings per share.
