Shopify announces record Black Friday sales of $2.4 billion

Canada’s Shopify announced over the weekend record-setting global Black Friday sales of $2.4 billion coming from the more than one million businesses on its platform, in approximately 175 countries around the world, such as Allbirds, Gymshark, Heinz, and Staples.

Shopify-powered businesses saw a 75 percent increase in sales compared to Black Friday in 2019, with merchants collectively crossing the $1 billion in sales mark by 8:00am EST. The average Black Friday cart price globally was $90.70, an increase of 11 percent from last year.

New York, London, and Los Angeles were the top-selling cities worldwide on Black Friday, with top-selling countries including U.S., UK, and Canada.

Meanwhile, top product categories globally were apparel and accessories, followed by health and beauty and home and garden.

“We’re thrilled with the Black Friday sales generated by the businesses on Shopify. In just a single day, merchants around the world produced more than 80 percent of the sales of the entire holiday shopping weekend last year,” said Harley Finkelstein, president of Shopify.

“With more consumers than ever shopping online this year, we anticipate this weekend being one of the biggest ecommerce events in history, as consumers vote with their wallets and support the independent and direct-to-consumer businesses they love.”

Shopify has benefited from the increase of brick-and-mortar retailers turning towards its e-commerce platform as online shopping surges due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Most recently, the company also joined hands with TikTok to help its one million-plus merchants advertise their products more easily on the video-sharing app, as well as teamed up with Asia's leading digital wallet platform Alipay to better serve Shopify merchants in the U.S.
