Teen Vogue's Phillip Picardi leaves Condé Nast

Published
Aug 27, 2018

Phillip Picardi, the former chief content officer at Condé Nast's Teen Vogue and LGBTQ publication Them is leaving the legendary publishing house to become the editor-in-chief of Out Magazine, an LGBTQ fashion, entertainment and lifestyle publication established in 1992.

Posting a screenshot of the Wall Street Journal's headline regarding his leave on his Instagram, Picardi wrote in his caption: "well, this isn’t exactly how I wanted to announce a new gig, but yes: I’m going to be the new editor-in-chief of @outmagazine, succeeding @aaronovitch. It has been the honor of a lifetime to work for Anna Wintour and @amytastley at a dream job, where I started as a wee intern and ended as chief content officer. It was surreal to launch an LGBTQ+ brand at Condé Nast, and watch @them grow and blossom. @outmagazine is the kind of legacy LGBTQ+ publication that practically everyone in the community knows and treasures — and I’m really excited to be a part of its future. There will be more to come later but, for now: I’m coming, OUT! (In December.) Stay tuned."

27-year-old Picardi began working at Teen Vogue as an intern and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming digital editorial director of Teen Vogue in 2015 and chief content officer of the magazine in January of this year. He became known as a revolutionary addition to Condé Nast when his choice to publish political and LGBTQ content in Teen Vogue gained the magazine's online platform a consistent surge of new visitors.

In 2017, Picardi created, launched and became chief content officer of Them, a media brand focused on LGBTQ+ issues and Condé Nast's newest publication since Portfolio magazine in 2007.

Picardi will be replacing Out Magazine's current editor-in-chief Aaron Hicklin, who announced his departure earlier this month.

Representatives at Condé Nast have confirmed Picardi's departure, but have not given further comment. His replacement at Teen Vogue and Them has not been formally announced.
