Patternpeople : AW10 Couture - Lace Returns

Published
Jul 22, 2010

Valentino, Givenchy, Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, Valentino

The haute couture collections are keeping the fashion scene in Paris humming with delight. The knock out shows of Dior and Chanel have left plenty to talk about. However, my personal favorite so far has been the elegant and painstakingly intricate pieces of Givenchy. The lace motif – a never-ending theme repeated over the last few seasons on the runway – continues to rein. For Givenchy, Riccardo Tisci used the skeleton form, inspired by the life and obsessions of Frida Kahlo, and reinterpreted it through Chantilly lace, fringe and bead work creating a stunning combination. Lace also appears on the 60s inspired frocks at Valentino to the vamp looks at Gaultier. Some how these pieces fall flat in comparison to the innovative use of lace as seen throughout the collection at Givenchy.
